ST. MURUMBA COLLEGE REMAINS A TRAIL BLAZER, CANVASES FOR GOVT. ATTENTION; Authorities’ Report.

By Moses Gbande

When established in 1959 by the Catholic Missionaries, St. Murumba College, then known as Blessed Murumba College, the College was a trail Blazer of sorts, considering the famous, and leading roles it play in providing quality training to people leaving within Jos, the plateau state capital. It activities were been carried out at its temporary site.

It mostly cater for the training and Skill acquisition of non-northerners in Jos who hitherto, had difficulty in securing admissions for their sons and or wards in the government secondary schools and was to operate as a Day School from its temporary site.

In 1960, the academic activities were moved to the permanent site on Zaria Road, Jos, with the first intake of thirty (30) students who were mostly of Igbo extraction.

In those days the primary aim of the funding fathers was to provide secondary education to Catholic youths in Jos metropolis as well as bring up children who will appreciate the ideals, values and attributes of a good citizen and to emulate such characteristics, among others.

Records have shown that from the initial intake of thirty students in 1959, the college has grown to be a key player in giving admissions and from students in secondary education not only to non northerners as it were but to others across the whole nation and even beyond irrespective of tribe religion or creed.

As the College turned sixty, it is normal that alot would be said about the College; the success story and the challenges. It is worth knowing that St. Murumba College as it stands today has produced several thousands of graduates who have made landmaxk achievernents in different fields of human endeavors.

Meanwhile, our concerned is that with this significant contributions that the College has put into the Society, it still suffered infrastructural decay that are begging for attention, its football pitch where other Federal agencies as the Police, FRSC, CIVIL Defense use for the training of their personnel is an eye sore.

”Our country and the world at large can only be good and get better if we order our priorities and values as a nation right. You will agree
with me that the secondary level provides a good platform for the formation the of the Child who eventually will become the future leader. Our College over the years has expiditously made the
best use of such platforms to improve the lot of society. It is therefore this story that I want our friends from the Media who should be unbiased in their reportage to join us and spread the story”.

Briefing Journalists on activites lined up to mark the Diamond Jubilee, President of St. Murumba Old Boys Joseph Kadya Gorah stressed the need for the Federal Governent through the Ministry of Sports to take up one of the projects in the institution as a mark of honour and recognition to enermous contributions to national developments.

” However, with all these not much is perhaps heard about the school that lies in & serene environment on Zaria Road in Jos. Given our contributions to sports growth in Nigeria, it will only be proper that honour should and must be given to whom honour is due. It 1s time to showcase the college to the world through the power of the pen. I
am happy to note that the people who should hear this story are here. As vanguards of information, we expect that you will maintain a front line position to inform and educate the society on what it should know. The citizens must be kept abreast with governments activities as well as the activities of institutions such as ours, whether they are in the positive or negative”.

As dignitaries gathered to support the College, it is encouraging too, for the Alumini to make best use of the Diamond Jubilee, as an opportunity to give back to their Alma marta so as to rewrite the story of the institution to a positive perspective.
