Our Correspondent reports that, 15th of January every year is a date set aside to mark the Armed Forces Remembrancewk Day (AFRD) In Nigeria. The day specifically honours the fallen members of the Armed Forces who Fought in the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War and those who served or are still serving in various Peace Support Operations worldwide.

The Day, also known as the Armed Force Day, was formerly celebrated on 11 November of every year (then referred to as 11-11 or poppy Day) to coincide with the World War II veterans Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth of Nations.

However, it was changed to 15th January to commemorate the end of the Nigerian Civil War on January 15th 1970. The need to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to the Nation cannot be over emphasized.

Beside those who lost their lives, there are many who are alive today but traumatized while others are physically challenged. Many families have had to go through and are going through untold hardships as a result of such sacrifices.

The day therefore recognizes and gives honour to the fallen and living heroes who risked and continue to risk their lives for the territorial integn’ty of the na tion and for peace to reign worldwide.
