INSECURITY: PLateau Set To Domesticate Community Policing

In the face of the recent upsurge of lnsecurity In most parts of the Country, the Plateau State Government in its bid to deepen and further sustain peace, Tuesday held a Peace and Security Community Dialogue.

The dialogue, with the theme: Domestication of Community Policing in Plateau State: Exploring the Indigenous Options, was held on the 4th February, 2020 at Banquet Hall, New Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos.

The Dialogue was facilitated by a Legal luminary, Prof. Dakas C. J. Dakas and a seasoned academician, Dr. Chris Kwaja. It also had discussants cutting across the various Security Agencies in the State.

In attendance were members of the State Security Council, State Executive Council, Plateau State House of Assembly; Chairmen of Local Government Councils, Chairman and Members of the State Traditional Council; Community leaders, Christian Association of Nigeria, Jama’atu Nasril Islam and Plateau lndigenes Development Association of Nigeria (PIDAN) among others.

The primary objective of the Dialogue was to weave the current national discourse on decentralisation of Security in the face of breaches that is threatening national unity by finding acceptable ways of incorporating community participation in the present security architectural framework in the State.

At the end of the presentations and the interactive sessions, the Dialogue came up with the following

Resolutions: Participants agree that Community Policing as a veritable security option in a complex and

1. fragile community should be pursued at all levels; That a more robust synergy and confidence building be encouraged among the established or

2. statutoty security outfits like the Armed Forces, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp(NSCDC) and other agencies within the ambits of the Law. that the Operation Rainbow as a security framework in the State be strengthened and capacity of its operatives increased so that the Neighbourhood Watch component can be a visible channel for intelligence gathering and response; that the Initiative of the North Central Governors is commendable in the resolve for the geo-political zone to establish a Community Policing Framework to confront the insecurity threatening the Country’s corporate existence; that a Technical Committee be set up by Government to harmonise the presentations and evolve a more sustainable Community Policing Framework for immediate implementation in the State. that Traditional Leaders represents key pillars for intelligence gathering and they should be supported to discharge such responsibility in the overall interest of safety and security. that baseline data of the Communities as proactive initiative are Imperative in the successful implementation of Community Policing.
