The Chairman of Taraba state Independent Electoral Commission (TSIEC), Dr. Philip Duwe, on Monday said the Commission would conduct elections in all the sixteen local government areas of the state on the 16th May, 2020.
Duwe, who disclosed this in Jalingo while briefing journalists said that insecurity in some parts of the state were factor that delayed the conduct of the local government council election in the state.
He stressed that the commission and the government were willing to conduct council elections, but the crisis in some parts of the state delayed the election.
He maintained that the state house of assembly had already approved the budget of 2020 for the commission.
“2019 was not safe for us to conduct local government election in the state, and that was why the commission has to wait for signal from security agencies as to when it will be convenient to hold elections” he said.
He maintained that Taraba state last year came under serious security threat, adding that the Governor can only give instruction for the conduct of election based on security report from security agents.
The Chairman charged citizens of Taraba state to conduct themselves in an orderly manner and allow people to participate in the forthcoming local government elections.
He urged politicians to equally play the game according to the rules and also educate their supporters on the need to live peaceful with one another.
Our correspondent reported that the tenure of the elected council chairmen had elapsed since 2019 and the state government has been appointing Caretaker Committee to pilot the affairs of the councils.
