Hoodlums in Jalingo, Taraba state capital on Saturday evening broke into one of the Taraba state government warehouses located opposite CAN Secretariat, along FGGC Road, carting away various food items.
Our Reporter who was at the scene of the incident, noted that hundreds of people were seen gaining access to the warehouse and we’re moving with different good items including noodles, salt, maize and others valuable food items.
A youth, name withheld told our Correspondent that the government was not fair to the masses by keeping the tones of food items rotten while the poor continue to die of hunger.
“It is very unfortunate that these large quantities of food items which were supposed to be shared to the less privileged as palliative for Covid-19 are kept in the warehouses left to rotten.”
He said that they were not hoodlums but people who have come to take what is rightly meant for them.
When contacted, the special Adviser to Governor Ishaku on media and publicity, Mr. Bala Dan Abu confirmed the incident without further explanation.
Meanwhile, when our correspondent contacted, Mr. Danazumi Novalga, permanent Secretary SEMA, he simply replied “I have retired and I am no longer in charge of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).”
As at the time of filling this report, the looting of the food items continued unabated.
Our Correspondent also gathered that no fewer than three persons were feared death in the looting of food items at the government warehouse runs into the night.
Our Correspondent also saw three dead bodies around 7:40pm at the gate of the warehouse while several others were lying helpless.
It was gathered the dead and injured were victims of stampede as hundreds continue to troop into the warehouse to loot palliatives.
There are fears there may be more deaths as residents continued to jump in and out of the fence with the looted items.
It was observed as hundreds were scouting for the items, others were busy stealing handsets and other valuables.
