Awesme!!: David Fiase Unvails His Book “Climate Change Tips For Kids”

The first ever climate change educational booklet for Nigerian kids was unveiled to the public on September 24th, 2021 at the auditorium of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abuja.

According to the author of the book, David Fiase, “Climate change will impact on the future lives of today’s young people in countless and unimaginable ways. They are therefore, the ones through whom remedial measures on climate change mitigation and adaptation should start.”

“Hence the need to empower young people, especially children in their formative stage from age six, with information about climate change and the environment to such an extent that they are actively involved in practical measures that will benefit the environment and reduce the escalation of environmental degradation.”

The sixteen paged book, which according to David, is meant to explain the concepts of climate change in an easily understandable manner for kids also aims at helping kids make good and simple choices to deal with the negative effects of climate change by raising their curiosity and interest in climate change thereby learning more from their school teachers through school environment clubs.

Climate change and the negative impact it has on the environment are increasingly becoming evident in such occurrences as floods, desertification, increasing temperatures and changing climatic and environmental patterns. These changes are in most cases a result of man’s actions or inactions to his immediate environment. Actions which increase gas emissions or reduce plant populations thereby depleting the ozone layer.

The book unveiling took place during the maiden edition of The Valerie Agberagba Clean, Renewable, and Energy Efficiency Competition featuring students from 10 junior secondary schools from across the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The event which was organized by the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers had in attendance representatives of the Honourable Minister of State for Environment; Honourable Ministers of State for Education; Honourable Ministers of Science and Technology; captains of industry, civil society organizations and schools from within Abuja who competed and won prizes in the competition organized by Engr. Valarie Agberagba.
