Sharing formula of COVID 19 special hazard allowances to health workers in Plateau Sate as contained in a circular from Federal Ministry of Health has sparked off serious reactions from the sector.
The circular which reads in part sates that “50% of consolidated basic salary for Doctors and other health workers in COVID19 designated hospitals” will be paid.
However, information reaching us indicates that wrangling started emanating when other health workers got hint that they are only entitled to 10% of their basic salaries instead of 50% as started in the circular released by the Federal Ministry of Health where as the 10% referred to in the circular is for non health workers..
The other health workers are said to have carefully studied the circular and considered themselves as sharing in the same risk hazards because they work in the same COVID 19 designated centers as other core health professional workers in the state. It should be noted that before now all health workers whether professionals or nonprofessional collect the same amount across board as hazard allowance, hence, they question the rational for disparity this time.
The situation if not handled properly may lead to down tool by these health workers in the state.
It would be recalled that the diversity of health workers in the health care institutions include: Medical Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, Laboratory Staff, Administrative and Account Staff, Radiologists, Physiotherapists, Ward Orderlies/ Cleaners, Works and Maintainance Staff, Compound Labourers, and Laundry Staff, together these health workers in their diversity make up the global work force Known as Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) excluding the Medical Doctors of which dues are deducted from their salaries.
